Classical guitar performance at the INPEX year-end meeting
I made my performance in this event with two songs: Greensleeves and Marriage D’amour.
I love classical guitar and wish I had a chance to take a formal class. A friend, Eka Juan, taught me how to play those two compositions when we were both in Junior High School. Then I moved to another island where classical guitar is not popular at all. INPEX Foundation Scholarship
Australian Development Scholarship
The INPEX foundation and the Australian Development Scholarship both notified me as their scholarship student at almost the same time, made it impossible to study at two continents. I decided to go to Japan for the obvious preference, and the INPEX foundation announced its selection results earlier anyway.
Writing Visual Basic game programming book
My first website was built on Geocities to share my work in game programming. During the last year of my bachelor’s course, I decided to write a book to share my knowledge of game programming. The book was published by ANDI Publisher Yogyakarta, one of the major IT books publisher. When I’m writing this paragraph, the book has been reprinted for the third time.
New record for the highest GPA
The youngest Cum Laude
I finished my bachelor’s course at Brawijaya University in 3.5 years with 3.75 GPA. Mind you that it was long before today’s era of GPA “inflation” and premature graduation. The GPA was also the new record in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Brawijaya University. My parents could not come to the ceremony, so my GF and one of my seniors came to represent them.

Djarum is a cigarette company and I did tell them that I’m not smoking. I got the scholarship in the last year of my bachelor’s course. As for the scholarship from Brawijaya University, I hardly remember the detail.
Taking a ‘full-time’ job in a cram school
One year after I started university, my mother told me to quit because she could not provide financial support any further. Unlike in developed countries, looking for an acceptable part-time job in Indonesia was hard at that time, but I refused to give up. I ended up in a newly established cram school, which later developed into Sigma Education Center. It was not really a part-time job to say, because most of the day I have to teach from 2 to 10 PM and I served as the head of the Chemistry division there. Most of my students were from St. Yusuf senior high school, and some were from St. Albertus senior high school.
Teaching in Kedampul village
Kedampul is a small-traditional village and categorized as poor by the government. I taught the students of a local elementary school in there for 1 month (last January 2002). I spent most of my time to motivate them to pursue higher education. Unfortunately, most of the parents hardly show any interest to support them.
Entrepreneurship seminar
Two days retreat from the routine. An interesting quote from the main speaker was, “Indonesians hardly want to become an entrepreneur, but gladly want to be a part of the military. They are afraid to lose their money, but they are not afraid to lose their life.”
Top national examination score (NEM) in chemistry
The overall score was also the highest in the school and the region. A teacher told me that the score for the chemistry subject was the highest at the province level. From left-to-right: Me, Erminawati (Teacher), Dewi Rahmadani (Silver medal), and Harris Domili (Bronze medal).
Book review competition :: 1st rank
The book was related to Tempe production from Kecipir bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus). The event was held during the 52nd year commemoration of the Indonesian Independence.
English essay competition :: 3rd rank
The essay theme was “Experience is the best teacher”. The pretty girl on my right-side is the 2nd winner, Tasiah, and she is now an English teacher in a junior high school. Next to her is the 1st winner, Ira Yusnita, who stayed in the USA for one year prior to the competition. The event was held during the 52nd year commemoration of the Indonesian Independence.
Postal stamp design competition :: 2nd rank
Poster design competition :: 2nd rank
The stamp design competition was organized by the Indonesian Postal Office and the poster design competition was organized (probably) by the town hall. In both competitions, I managed to get the second place, while the first place was all taken by Kristian Restu. He is a good illustrator and we worked together in the journalistic division.
Scholarship from the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Education
The first scholarship in my life. The amount is only sufficient to cover the tuition fee. The scholarship payment was made in the nearest post office. Since the payment date is uncertain, at some point it took months, I often walk to the post office only to hear the postman said, “No sonny, not yet .”
Creativity competition (Siswa Teladan election)
“Siswa Teladan” means a student who serves as a role model for other students. The Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Education held this competition annually to select the “best” student. The contest was done in three rounds: town, province, and national. I managed to get the first rank in the town level and retired as the third rank at the province level. Frankly, being a delinquent student at that time, I do not deserve the title (I do not know how the referees ended up with the decision). All of the trophies were kept in school.
Chief Editor of senior high school press
Being a freshman in high school, I did not pay much attention to the student council and a large student bulletin board (aka ‘wall-magazine’). The latter is simply because it was inactive and gloomy in appearance, even though the media was managed by journalistic-division that consists of fifteen members. The following year, when the new members of the student council were elected, I became the head of the art division and chief editor for the school press that manage the bulletin board. My first decision was to work with a small, four-membered, team. We managed to publish regularly and received good appreciation.
Chemistry study group – senior high school
My journey to the chemistry world was started in this small group. It was a group tutorial by a teacher, Mr. Wahiduddin, who taught chemistry and inspired the members with his life story. If every individual has particular teachers that influence his/her life, in my case Mr. Wahiduddin is definitely one of those teachers.
